Greatest WM Match Ever: Round 2 (Kamala Bracket)

Round two rolls. We’re onto the fourth and final bracket named after the belly slapping, top of the lungs screaming beast known as Kamala.

The results from the first round went as follows:
1. Undertaker/Michaels @ WM25 (93%) d. 8. Undertaker/HHH @ WM17 (7%)
4. Angle/Benoit @ WM17 (75%) d. 5. Cena/Michaels @ WM23 (25%) – I thought this would be a lot closer.
3. Warrior/Savage @ WM7 (57%) d. 6. MITB @ WM23 (43%)
2. Benoit/HHH/HBK @ WM20 (54%) d. Rock/Austin @ WM19 (46%)

All the favorites won. Time for round two. Here’s how it looks…

THE KAMALA BRACKET – ROUND TWO

#1) The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels @ WM25
The 2009 match of the year pretty much all over the place saw the two longest tenured performers in WWE face off at the 25th Mania. The result was a show stealing match thanks to some of the best nearfall sequences ever and that one awesome facial expression from the Undertaker where he was like, “WHAT THE FUCK?” A classic in every sense of the word. Couldn’t find the whole match, so we’ll go with the awesome video package about it.

VERSUS

#4) Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit @ WM17
At one point on commentary in this matchup, announcer Paul Heyman talks about how great the technical wrestling is during the match. And he’s right. There are holds, counter holds and a finish that took a lot of people by surprise. One of the best matches ever on what is arguably the best PPV ever.

Here’s the poll:

The winner of that matchup will face the winner of this one:

#2) Chris Benoit vs. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels for the World Title @ WM20
The best triple threat match ever? A lot of people would say yes. This was Benoit’s best shot at winning the World Title and he’d have to do against two main event regulars. It was the coming out party for the Rabid Wolverine with a hot New York crowd behind him every step of the way.

VERSUS

#3) Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage in a Retirement Match @ WM7
Savage walked in as one of the top heels of the company for a few years and he walked out as arguably the biggest babyface on the roster. Plus, he carried a blown up Warrior to one hell of a good match. When you can scan a crowd of wrestling fans to show people crying at how touching a moment you have all you can really do is say job well done. If you want to know why Savage was one of the best ever, watch this match.

Thanks for reading, watching and voting.

Voted HBK/Taker and Benoit/HHH/HBK. Both of these were extremely difficult to pick.

Greatest job ever…. Being Friday. You get a paycheck for doing absolutely nothing. Since you are wearing a mask, no one hastels you outside of the arena. Kamala goes on a rampage, you just say…. “Well he is a cannibal from Uganda. What did you expect??? Now where is my money? What you are not going to pay me? Hey Kamala, Come here and Eat Promoter. Double pay, that is very generous of you. Lets go and find the commisary Kamala…I am hungry”

    Job well done!

Undertaker/HBK beats Angle/Benoit on it’s own terms (spellbinding wrestling) and beats it handily on others (storytelling.)

For me, Savage/Warrior beats the triple threat because I love the Liz reunion. It’s one of those powerful moments when wrestlers integrate their real lives to add emotional subtext, and the angle took over two years to set up, starting with the explosion of the Mega Powers. You don’t see that kind of patient storytelling today. That whole last ten minutes with Savage landing five flying elbow drops just has me everytime I see it like a good movie would.

Undertaker/HBK beats Angle/Benoit hands down and as much as I like Warrior/Savage , I’m picking Benoit/HBK/HHH. Now, Undertaker/HBK vs Benoit/HBK/HHH is very difficult to pick.

Yeah, that’ll be really tough to pick. It’s like…both have stellar workrates and capture a beautiful moment in wrestling history. I might have to re-watch both to decide that one.

I’m picking Taker/HBK all the way. I was there and the atmosphere in that place was unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed.

I don’t get why people like the triple threat so much, just because Benoit won? blah

Heenan during Savage/Elizabeth reunion at 30:40 mark: “This is sickening!” Hahahahahahahahah.

HBK/Taker and HHH/HBK/Benoit. Benoit/Angle was great but it was a mid-card match that got only 11 minutes. I wish they let them go 20 or 25 on that day….it would have been a 5-star match easily.

NO contest with the triple threat vs Savage/Warrior. As I’ve stated before, Warrior was awful. EVERYTHING he did was terrible. I’m not even sure if Angle, Benoit or HBK in their primes could have gotten a good match out of the late 80s/early 90s Warrior. I’ll never understand why he was so popular.

I have to admit re-watching these old wrestlemania matches really desires for heel color commentary. Ventura and even moreso Heenan w/ Monsoon make the matches so much more enjoyable to watch. Damn I miss them.

Just watched the Undertaker/HBK highlight reel embedded above. Whoever thought to have Madame Leota from The Haunted Mansion splice together some Shakespeare to talk about The Undertaker is a genius. “Of all the wonders I have heard, it seems most strange that men should fear, hearing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come. The bell invites thee! Hear it not? For it is a knell that summons thee to Heaven… or… to Hell!” The breath of someone blowing a candle out is wonderfully spooky too! LOVE IT!

Heenan is really under-rated. He’s IMO the best heel announcer of all time.

    Jessie Ventura and Gorlilla Monsoon.

Jessie : What’s up with the tassels on the ultimate warrior?

Gorilla: I think their part of his costume Jessie.

Jessie : If i was in the ring with him, i would be trying to choke him with them!
