The Midweek Breakdown: Teddy Long books a 10 Count

Posted by Cody Dodson - February 22, 2012 - Cody Dodson, Columns, wwe

Hello once again, dear readers, and happy Wednesday to you all. It’s time for another edition of The Midweek Breakdown. I was going to do a lengthy, philosophical column about the importance of Twitter-battling B-list R&B singers, but as you can see by the title of what you’re reading, Teddy Long came to my house and told me he loves the 10 Count so much that I just had to do it this week or else I would have to go one on one wit da Randah Or-TON. I chose to write the 10 Count. Before we begin, I want to apologize for not making it on here for Friday Headlines last week. I was out of town with a horrible Internet connection. I thought I would be able to make it work, as I was able to get the Wednesday column posted, but Headlines was just not meant to be. Anyways, I apologize and I’ll be back in form this Friday. A Matter of Character – Jinder Mahal
By Matty J. Douglas

Stereotypes have been a part of wrestling for as long as I can remember. From Cryme Tyme, to the Iron Sheik, to Nikolai Volkoff, these characters and many more like them, perpetuated stereotypes about a culture or group, in ways that were fun and entertaining. The WWE has done a good job of presenting us with fun stereotypes, which are okay because they are done for the sake of entertainment, and are for all intents and purposes, entertaining (at least to a degree). Unfortunately the WWE is currently perpetuating stereotypes about people of Indian heritage through the character Jinder Mahal; stereotypes that have not resulted in entertaining or compelling television. Thursday Headlines: WWE on YouTube
By Thomas and Aaron Briggs

The WWE hasn’t been shy about fully buying into new social media as a means to increase viewership.  Their use of Twitter has become a real point of contention with fans over the last year.  Fans want their favorite superstars to be accessible on the service, but they’ve begun to resent the way WWE pushes Twitter down their throats on television.  Well get ready WWE Universe!  Here comes the WWE and YouTube.

The Midweek Breakdown: The 10 Count
By Cody Dodson

Ladies and gentlemen, the funk is on a roll, there are too many limes for lobster heads, and the Deadman is back complete with new curled hair action. This is the Midweek Breakdown, and I am your ever so grateful host, Cody Dodson. I want to thank everybody who read last week’s column and left me feedback on the “10 thoughts” format. The feedback was very positive, and it seemed that most of you would rather hear read me ramble a little bit about a lot of things instead of ramble a lot about one thing. I enjoyed writing the column as well. It was over 500 words longer than my normal writing and I didn’t even notice. I’ve decided to make it a regular feature that I will call “The 10 Count.” I’d like to thank the bossman himself, Big Johnny Canton, for that title. I won’t be doing it every week, but it will definitely appear pretty often on Wednesdays as long as you continue to enjoy it. Without further adieu, let’s get started with this week’s 10 Count!

THE SMACKING OF WWE SMACKDOWN 1/27/12

Hello chumps and chumpettes, and welcome to another edition of The Smacking Of WWE Smackdown. I expected this review to go up a lot earlier, but that was before I hyperextended my knee and everyone started swinging chairs at each other.

So are you ready to get smacked up and then lay around for a while and not really do anything? I know I am! (Oh God, I forgot. That’s heroin abuse. I really wish this thing came with a delete key.)

140 Characters or Less
By Mike Aires

I was re-watching this week’s Raw a couple days ago (since I fell asleep Monday evening), enjoying Brodus Clay dance around and smash the stupid ginger Heath Slater.  It was also fun to see Kane have his first official match since putting on his new/old/new mask and beat the living hell out of someone.  An appearance by Mick Foley wearing familiar Cactus Jack attire always brings a smile.  Why do I bring up these very certain details?  Each of these gentlemen has made a career (so far, anyways) by becoming a completely different person.  Kane doesn’t go home and choke slam his dogs to hell.  I doubt Brodus Clay has to talk to archeologists about being the only living Funkasaurus.  I really hope Mick Foley doesn’t live in a boiler, and scream out for his mommy.

Friday Headlines: 2012 – The Year of the Pay-Per-View

WWE sure likes to change their PPV schedule around, don’t they? The past few weeks have seen several changes to the 2012 lineup, and this week has been no different. After Money In The Bank was replaced with TLC and TLC was replaced with Bragging Rights and Bragging Rights was replaced by Brodus Clay Cooks A Tuna Melt: LIVE, it would appear that we have the finalized* schedule available to us. Check it out:

*Not actually finalized. Summerslam to be moved to a date in February.

THE SMACKING OF WWE SMACKDOWN 1/20/12

Welcome true believers to this week’s sin-tastic review. Smackdown hailed from lovely land of broken dreams Las Vegas last night, so you know what that means; roulette wheel filled with gimmicky matches and lots of “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” comments. Let’s get to it, shall we?

It’s time to SMACK YOU IN YOUR GODDAMN MOUTH. (Wow. Just… I thought that I needed a catchphrase with a little more oomph. That wasn’t oomph, it was just… mean. I’m so sorry guys. That was uncalled for. Friends?)

The Sunday Sharpshooter: Pros and Cons of The Funkasaurus

The Pros and Cons of The Funkasaurus Character

This Monday we finally got to see the (re)debut of Brodus Clay on Raw.  The debut, which had been advertised for months, was surely different than what many fans had expected.  Clay, who is 6’7 and weighs over 370 lbs, was obviously expected by many to play the monster-heel role on Raw.  I’d argue that expectation was warranted.  Clay previously played a similar enforcer role for Alberto Del Rio, and Mark Henry – Smackdown’s monster heel – is credited with a lot of their recent ratings success.  Yet Clay showed up on Raw with an altogether different gimmick: The Funkasaurus.

Canton’s Corner: The Wrestling Week in Review – January 14

Follow me on Twitter at @johnreport

Welcome to Canton’s Corner. We’ve got the usual happening this week with some thoughts on Raw & Smackdown plus the poll, the random video and the twitter ten where I answer your wrestling related questions. I don’t have a section for TNA this week. I was one of the six people that watched their PPV, which was so poorly booked and did nothing good for anybody in the company. I realize the last 45 minutes of Impact were good with two rematches, but I couldn’t handle more TNA in a week. To the few that care about my TNA thoughts, they will return next week. Let’s get to it.

THE SMACKING OF WWE SMACKDOWN 1/13/12

Hello lasses and fellows. Welcome to this week’s smacking of WWE Smackdown. We’ve got a lot to go over this week, so let’s skip the part where I ask you to leave a comment below to express your love/disdain of this column and get right into the meat and potatoes of this thing.

It’s time to smack it around a little bit and see what happens! (This is getting sad. I should have come up with a catchphrase by now that doesn’t allude to some sort of masturbatory phrasing. You’d think I’d be better at this. Surprise, I’m not.)

Wednesday Headlines: Skyrim Gets Savage… The Macho Kind

Feel free to write your dumb "I took an arrow to the knee" comments below, or leave them in hell where they belong. I mean, come on guys. Seriously.

Ever since I’ve taken over the Smackdown reviews (which you should totally read right here, I mean come on guys don’t be rude) I’ve had to cut down on the Headlines, because I mentally shut down if I write more then 3,000 words a week and don’t get paid for it. Okay you got me, I’m lazy, are you happy? Anyway, while the other guys are doing a fantastic job (I really mean it, they’re so good at it they’re starting to make me look bad, the assholes) with their respective days, having to share the little bit of wrestling-related news with so many people can be a tad trying. Headlines is kind of my baby and I love each of them like you probably do your children; you clearly like some more then the others but still care about them all to some extent, even that short one that’s kind of dumb and you know you won’t be setting up a college fund for.
