"Move over, Versace"

Well, It’s Tuesday morning and I know all of you John Reportamaniacs are sitting at home, or in some cases, your mothers basement, and are eagerly apathetically awaiting the weekly dose of off kilter humor that only Mike and I can attempt. I have bad (good?) news for you. Due to Mike having a life (!), he had to miss this week’s column. But fear not! I, the great and powerful Fozz, am here to make your Tuesday brighter! So what is newsworthy this week? Let’s see…

JIMMY HART IS A FASHION CRITIC!

The Lonestar Book Review
Book #5: Countdown to Lockdown, by Mick Foley

Those of you who don’t understand the history of the wrestling business and specifically the history of the WWE might not get what all the fuss is about when it comes to good old Mick Foley. While it’s pretty clear that most of the staff members of thejohnreport.net have great respect for the man and I assume that most of our readership does as well, indulge me for a moment and I will briefly explain to the uninitiated how Foley earned said respect. Mick, as personas Cactus Jack, Mankind, Dude Love, or simply as himself, put his body on the line and his heart on his sleeve to overcome biological disadvantage and professional skepticism, producing top-level entertainment along the way. As an artist and in the ring, Foley could be as lovable as a muppet, as insane as Leatherface, as inspirational as Rocky Balboa and as deadly as barbed wire. Impressive accomplishments on PPV and television aside, Mick Foley’s impact on wrestling literature makes him the Hulk Hogan of the genre. Without Foley there would be no books by Chris Jericho, no examinations of the wrestling industry from outside sources, no ghostwritten books for Austin, the Rock or the Hardy Boys, simply no wrestling literature at all. Popular or commercial opinion said that wrestling fans were poor, uneducated, illiterate lower class people with no interest in words structured in anything greater than comic book bubbles or the stories in a dirty magazine. Foley changed that outlook with one self-written tome and in one big gamble, but that’s a tale for another time. Today I’m discussing the black sheep of the Foley autobiographical catalogue, Mick’s TNA book, Countdown to Lockdown.

140 Characters or Less
By Mike Aires

I was re-watching this week’s Raw a couple days ago (since I fell asleep Monday evening), enjoying Brodus Clay dance around and smash the stupid ginger Heath Slater.  It was also fun to see Kane have his first official match since putting on his new/old/new mask and beat the living hell out of someone.  An appearance by Mick Foley wearing familiar Cactus Jack attire always brings a smile.  Why do I bring up these very certain details?  Each of these gentlemen has made a career (so far, anyways) by becoming a completely different person.  Kane doesn’t go home and choke slam his dogs to hell.  I doubt Brodus Clay has to talk to archeologists about being the only living Funkasaurus.  I really hope Mick Foley doesn’t live in a boiler, and scream out for his mommy.

Foley Is Good
By Mike Aires

Even after all of these years, it still entertains my brain that a guy who looks like Mick Foley not only competed in mainstream Pro Wrestling, but had a Hall of Fame-type career.  In a land where guys tower over normal sized guys, and have more muscle on one limb than most of us do in our whole body, Foley just went about his business looking like a normal homeless guy…chubby, flannel, and sweatpants.  I think so many people, myself included, connected with Foley for these reasons.  He didn’t seem like some jacked up monster.  He was one of us.  That’s just one of many reasons I was extremely happy with Mick’s “real” debut on Monday Night Raw this week.

The Sunday Sharpshooter: Top 5 Heel Turns
By Thomas Avb Briggs

Chris Jericho’s return this Monday was a big event.  The reaction to his ten-minute, all smiles – no talk, return has been mixed to say the least.  Personally, I loved every second of it and can’t wait to see the follow up.  For someone who’s assumed to be feuding with CM Punk in the near future, he has to be a heel.  And in his ten minutes of time on Raw this week, he was able to turn fans from chanting “Y2J!” to booing him by the end of the segment.  That’s just brilliant.  For anyone worried about where the WWE and Jericho is going with this character, just give them time.  Trust Jericho, he knows what he’s doing.

Jericho’s return, and possible heel turn, got me thinking about all of the great heel turns in modern wrestling.  It’s always fun to look back at favorite memories, and these are all great ones.  Here’s my list of the five greatest heel turns of all time:

OTA Presents: My Top 10 Royal Rumble Moments
By Mike Aires

What up, Aireheads? Welcome to 2012!  After a somewhat slow news week, the first Raw started off with a bang seeing Chris Jericho return and basically have every fan in the world do exactly what he wanted them to.  But you are going to read too many things about a guy who didn’t say a single word this week that I figured you might want to focus on something else:  The Royal Rumble.  The 25th anniversary of the Rumble is fast approaching, so what better time to discuss my favorite moments from past Rumbles?  Now, with every Top 10, I remind everyone that this is my own personal views.  Due to this fact, plus the fact that I didn’t start watching the WWE until later in my childhood, there will be more new moments than old.

So what moments make it?  How many non-royal rumble matches make it?  Let’s find out.

TJR: The Mick Foley Hardcore Comedy Tour – Review
By John Canton
Follow me on Twitter @johnreport

On Saturday December 3rd, the Mick Foley Hardcore Comedy Tour rolled into Waterloo, Ontario. If you’ve never heard of Waterloo, which is understandable, it’s about an hour west of Toronto. I was looking forward to the show because obviously I’ve been a huge fan of Foley’s in-ring career, his promos through the years, his books and I’ve heard good things about his comedy shows too. It was a guy’s night out that I know my friends and I were anticipating. I won’t be writing out Foley’s jokes on here or anything like that. It will be a review of what we saw, what was really funny and what the night meant to us.

Welcome to Canton’s Corner. We’ve got a loaded edition this weekend as always with the poll, plus my thoughts on WWE Raw, Smackdown & TNA Impact Wrestling. There’s also the Twitter Ten where I answer some of your questions plus the random video and Melo Out brings it home. It might be brief in some parts this week due to a lack of time on my part. Tis the season to work an insane amount of hours! Let’s roll.

Smacked Up!

Written by Christian Michael

Charlotte, North Carolina are you ready for the Smack?

This Holiday Edition of SmackDown kicks off with Jolly Ol’ St. Mick heading down to the ring. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a total mark for Christmas but I have to question why they are having a holiday special in November, still three and a half weeks away from Christmas. I guess going live needs a tag line attached to it like when it was a SUPER SmackDown last time the show went live. Mick even brings up that we’re a few weeks away from the big day. He admits to being a huge Christmas guy also. Mick reminds us that tonight Daniel Bryan to surprisingly some boos, will challenge Mark Henry for the World Heavyweight Championship in a Steel Cage Match. Mick also announces that there will be a Miracle on 34th Street Fight and an All I Want for Christmas Battle Royal tonight. He doesn’t mention any participants but does say that the winner of the Battle Royal will have his Christmas wish granted. Foley then goes on to say that he couldn’t keep Michael Cole off SmackDown but he can determine how he dresses so he has Cole come out dressed as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Mick then brings out Booker T dressed as Santa Claus. Josh Mathews is already at ringside dressed like Buddy the Elf. Mick has Booker do a Spin-a-roonie for the Jewish members of the Universe. Because you know, dreidels spin and so does Booker. The party gets interrupted by Cody Rhodes. Cody calls Booker a lowly announcer again and says that Booker is taking away time from people that can still compete. Booker says he doesn’t want to throw down with Cody but he doesn’t want Cody to think that he can’t handle himself in the ring. Cody says that Booker claims he doesn’t have a problem with him but in actuality he does because Cody can still call himself a Champion while Booker will never again be able to. Mick steps in and defends Booker and makes a match for later tonight, Booker T vs. Cody Rhodes. It doesn’t seem like Booker is too ecstatic to have the match. (more…)

Fozzy, Foley & Fighting
By Laurence Salford

The past week for me has been one of the most surreal for me as a wrestling fan. In a supreme strike of coincidence, Fozzy, WWE and Mick Foley have all descended upon my hometown of Nottingham , England over the past week to perform, and it has been one of the more memorable weeks for me as a wrestling fan. Living out here in the UK , luckily we get regular tours from both WWE and TNA, as they tend to prioritise coming here for overseas tour, which gives us regular exposure to the events. Despite this, I rarely attend them, mainly because the one solitary house show that I have been to before was good, but not exceptional, and it was very expensive. Fozzy tour here regularly, due to the large metal music fan base that exists in the UK , and I have no idea why Foley toured here.
