How Ridiculous Should a Gimmick Get?
By Laurence Salford
Last week on Raw saw the much critically divisive segment at the end of the programme, where Kane attempted to drag Zack Ryder through a hole in the ring, which I’m guessing was supposed to represent Hell. When Cena had pulled Ryder to safety, a great ball of flame erupted from within the hell-hole, with the camera showing the fear in both Ryder and Cena’s faces. I for one had no problem with this segment, as it represents a part of Kane’s character which has been around since its inception many years ago, but to other people, it seemed outdated and silly, a type of move that belonged during the 1990’s era of wrestling. It got me thinking – just how ridiculous can you push a gimmick, in this day and age of wrestling?
The Monday Sharpshooter: Jericho is Punk’s Perfect Opponent in 2012 By Thomas Avb Briggs
Welcome to the very first Sunday Sharpshooter of 2012. Except for it’s Monday. Funny how that works, right? Needless to say, my New Years Eve and New Years day were filled with celebration, and I took a little break from writing. So I’m sorry if you looked for my column yesterday and wondered where the hell I was. Who am I kidding? Nobody looks forward to the Sunday Sharpshooter that much!
Today is 1/2/12, so obviously I’m going to discuss the subject of many rumors surrounding the WWE 1/2/12 mystery videos. Yep, I’m going to talk about Chris Jericho. Will he be making his return tonight? I don’t really know. I certainly hope so. In all honesty, it’s just as likely that we’ll be seeing the Undertaker making his return. But regardless of whether or not he’s been behind all of these videos (which you can check out below), I’d argue that Chris Jericho is a necessity for WresleMania 28.
There’s a soft spot in my heart for Survivor Series, the unloved child of the “big four” begotten by the brainchild of Vince McMahon. Sure, the Rumble is always the most fun time of the year, Wrestlemania is Wrestlemania, and Summerslam has reclaimed its former glory over the past couple of years. Survivor Series is such a black sheep that Vince McMahon threatened to cancel it on a conference call with WWE stockholders in 2010! In a world where everything changes at the push of a button, it’s nice to know that tradition still exists somewhere.
Being the news guy at this blog can be difficult at times, because I’m somewhat reliant on other websites for content. We don’t have journalists on staff here; we are simply a collection of bloggers. We don’t have the credentials or motivation to sniff out our own exclusive scoops. If other websites don’t report anything, than it can make for a really boring post here. The trick is to make something out of nothing, which I’ve had to do on numerous occasions. This past weekend however was a total bust. Nothing interesting happened. I don’t know if it was because people were overreacting intently focused on the Hurricane Helms that “ravaged” the eastern coast, but this past weekend was dull as soup. The only thing that I found remotely interesting to talk about is that somebody from SE Scoops thinks The Undertaker’s hair length is a story that needs regular updates.
A few months back if you had asked me if Sin Cara’s WWE career was going well, I might have just shrugged while I finished my Orange Julius. While never being a particularly stand-out performer since his debut, he’s never done anything that has made me think he couldn’t get better. He had the skill, the experience, and the favor of the boss’s son-in-law, so I didn’t see anything that could really stand in his way. That is until the Anti-Monitor showed up and gave him steroids, and Sheamus power bombed him out of continuity.
Everybody has their own opinion, this is no secret. It’s considered by most that an opinion can’t be wrong, because an opinion is not a fact. Because there is no logical worldwide council that decides on whether or not oranges are delicious, your opinion on oranges cannot be proven wrong, it is simply your thought. But, every once in a while you meet someone whose opinion is so out there, a large group bands together and says in unison, “You’re an idiot, thus making your opinion wrong.”
Sometimes in life things get bad. Not every day is going to be a wonderful experience, and on days like that you need a little pick-me-up. That my friends, is why God made Corgis.
The John Report: WWE WrestleMania 27 Preview

It’s time for WrestleMania 27. Finally. That seems like the popular word to use considering The Rock has finally come back to WWE after seven long years to participate in WWE’s biggest event of the year. He’s brought some excitement along with him, hasn’t he? It’s time to go over the entire nine match card (I’m not previewing the pre-show battle royal) with match predictions and my thoughts on what else we might expect. This preview is going to a lot shorter than my normal length because I’m hours away from going to the event itself and I wanted to get it posted so you know what’s on my mind going into the event.

Wow, been a hell of a weekend huh? I don’t know about you, but the entirety of my time off the past two days have been spent glued to either my television, computer, or phone while I followed the devastation in Japan. What made it especially hard for me is that I’m a complex creature, and when I feel sadness I immediately joke about it. I do this because it’s my defense mechanism to keep the despair from overwhelming me. But, because I know most people don’t cope with these kinds of things as poorly as I do, I couldn’t make a Godzilla joke the whole weekend without fear of backlash, and I had so many of them. I’m not a monster (unlike Godzilla) making jokes is just how I handle traumatic events. It’s probably not the healthiest way to deal with my emotions, but that’s between me and my therapist. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Japanese people and all others that were affected by this disaster. If you want to donate to the relief effort, just click here.

Lists of Wrestlemania: Top 5 Gimmicks
By David Kay
Welcome to the Lists of Wrestlemania, with me your host, David Kay. I do apologize for the hiccup in yesterday’s column, as we won’t be talking about the Top Wrestlemania’s until Friday. Today, we’re taking a look at the Superstars who were more machine than man, and by that I mean the Top 5 Gimmicks of Wrestlemania. Now a gimmick to me, is more than just an extension of oneself. What I mean by that, is that The Rock and Stone Cold don’t really count because it’s widely accepted that those guys were just themselves, with the character level amped up to 11. I looked for people who played a role more so than enhanced their own character. So here they are, the Top 5 Gimmicks of Wrestlemania.
