Canton’s Corner: The Wrestling Week in Review – February 4
By John Canton

Welcome to Canton’s Corner. It was a good week of wrestling on TV this week. I thought Raw was excellent while both Smackdown and TNA Impact Wrestling were above average this week too. I’ll cover all three of those, plus the usual polls, video, Melo Out and other things you’ve come to expect from Canton’s Corner. It’s the Super Bowl on Sunday. If you follow me on Twitter you know I’m a huge NFL fan, even more than I am a wrestling fan. Before I get to the wrestling part of the column, I need to share my pick.

WrestleMania
March 31, 1985
Madison Square Garden in New York, New York
By John Canton (@johnreport)
The first WrestleMania took place at the home of WWE in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. How’d they get the name WrestleMania? The story goes, from the “True Story of WrestleMania” DVD, that ring announcer Howard Finkel came up with it when he mentioned the Beatles craze was known as “BeatleMania.”

They aired a video package hyping that the winner of the Royal Rumble gets to go to WrestleMania. Lots of people do, but for now we should only believe the winner does.

Foley Is Good
By Mike Aires
Even after all of these years, it still entertains my brain that a guy who looks like Mick Foley not only competed in mainstream Pro Wrestling, but had a Hall of Fame-type career. In a land where guys tower over normal sized guys, and have more muscle on one limb than most of us do in our whole body, Foley just went about his business looking like a normal homeless guy…chubby, flannel, and sweatpants. I think so many people, myself included, connected with Foley for these reasons. He didn’t seem like some jacked up monster. He was one of us. That’s just one of many reasons I was extremely happy with Mick’s “real” debut on Monday Night Raw this week.

There comes a day each week that we writers at TJR get nervous about. For Jacob Lindsey, it’s Mondays. For Thomas Briggs, it’s Thursdays. For me, it’s now on Fridays. It’s Headlines day. We think to ourselves, “Man, I really hope something awesome happened in the past 24 hours. That or I hope someone did or said something stupid.” Sometimes we are blessed to report fantastic news. Maybe somebody we like is getting a push up the card. Maybe somebody appeared in a major media segment or won an award. Maybe something so great happened that it reminds us all why we are fans and why we love this industry. Read more…

The John Report: The WWE Raw Deal 01/16/12
By John Canton

Live from Anaheim, California this is the Raw Deal…
They started the show with a video tribute of Martin Luther King Jr. in honor of this day that we honor him. It’s a video they air every year. On a lesser note, the Nickelback Raw intro song started up from there. When are they going to change that song?

So remember how surprised we all were when it was announced that CM Punk would accompany Chael Sonnen to the octagon for his next UFC fight in Chicago? The story goes that this is something that Punk and Sonnen worked out amongst themselves and that it was not put together by WWE or UFC. Obviously I don’t know details of the relationship between the two men, but I would assume that they are friends and Punk wanted to be part of this event because it’s in his hometown. Sounds fair enough to me.

The Midweek Breakdown: 10 Random Thoughts
by Cody Dodson
Hello TJR faithful and welcome to another edition of the Midweek Breakdown. I am your eleventh favorite columnist and your host, Cody Dodson. Today I’m going to do something that I like to do every once in a while and just talk about some random thoughts I have regarding what’s going on in WWE. Most weeks I like to take one or two topics and take an in-depth look at them. This week, I’m going to share some quick thoughts on a lot of different topics. There’s been a lot going on, so let’s get started.

Note from John: The following guest column is written by my good friend & TJR Radio co-host Frank the WWE Clown. It’s a piece about his adventures going to a number of WWE shows last year. It’s a great read. Enjoy.

The WWE Clown Year in Review 2011
By Frank Mustari
Ever seen some wacko dressed as a Clown in a WWE crowd? That guy has to have some serious problems, right? I mean, who would ever subject themselves to such humiliation like that?! I would.
For those of you who are not familiar with my antics, my name is Frank Mustari, and I am the WWE Clown. If you have ever watched WWE programming and saw a colorful wig, or a white and red clown face, then you have laid your eyes upon thee, and I’m sure you were very, very confused.

Welcome to the first TJR staff column of 2012. Instead of doing staff PPV previews, we’ll be doing staff columns once in a while. How often we do them is based on when we get ideas and of course, the feedback. The basic premise of this staff column is simple: Offer up five predictions for the wrestling world in 2012. It can be about WWE, TNA, ROH or anything you’d like as long as it relates to the wrestling business. Everybody’s been given a world limit to prevent this from being super long, but we assure you that you’ll get plenty of different opinions in this column.
In the year two thousaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand…twelve. That’s a Conan O’Brien reference. Enjoy.

Canton’s Corner: Thoughts on Orton, Cena and Lesnar – January 1
By John Canton
Follow me on Twitter at @johnreport
Happy New Year! Welcome to Canton’s Corner. Normally this gets posted on Saturday, but it was New Year’s Eve and I was out of town, so this week only it’s getting posted on a Sunday. We’re ditching the regular format for this week because I haven’t seen all of Impact (just the main event) or Smackdown (just the main event ending). This week’s CC features three commentaries on three big names in the wrestling business: Randy Orton, John Cena and Brock Lesnar. Let’s begin with the polls as always.
